Historique :	Saint Bernard (1090-1193). En 1145, après la période du schisme d'Anaclet, c'est un cistercien Eugène III qui devint pape. Bernard lui adresse de 'longues recommandations' dans le traité intitulé 'La Considération'. C'est ce livre qui figure sur le lutrin du tableau.
